THE PROBLEM WITH THE HERO'S JOURNEY
Part of my work in the world involves speaking. Fairly often, I have the pleasure of standing on a stage, in front of a group of amazing humans, to share perspectives, thoughts, information, and pieces of my journey.
This is a privilege that I do not take lightly; I often get compensated for this work, and I often speak to groups of people who are incredible, accomplished, and beyond inspiring.
I speak, and therefore I am technically a speaker. But never do I call myself a Motivational Speaker, and here's why.
Many times, the stories we hear from Motivational Speakers are based on the Hero's Journey - a person goes on an adventure, experiences challenges, wins a victory, and emerges...transformed. I love listening to these stories. I love a good Hero's Journey. I honor and respect all of the amazing Motivational Speakers who are doing fantastic work in the world.
And, I don't believe that we are ever transformed. We are evolving and transforming day by day and minute by minute. When we think we've been transformed, a new challenge leads us to question everything we thought we knew. The better things get, the more we're forced to make tougher and tougher choices about the things that aren't a "hell yeah." The moment we think we're done, we realize we've only just begun.
The Hero's Journey is never over.
