Let's Meet in the Field: Leading with empathy and Building Connection in Divisive Times
In a previous newsletter, executive and leadership coach Mari Andrew shared a reflection that deeply resonated with her:
"And, if I can hope for much more: It's that you won't dehumanize anyone who disagrees with you.
I don't fear the election result nearly as much as I fear the dehumanization that might accompany it. I hope you (and I!!) can remember that many of your closest friends might completely disagree with you on a non-political topic you hold so dear, and yet you love them.
And, most of all, no matter who you vote for, I hope that you feel safe, happy, supported, and loved today. I care soooo much less about who you vote for than who you are and what you need."
In today’s divisive climate, Mari’s words remind us of the importance of empathy and human connection. Even as different opinions and perspectives surface, our role as leaders and individuals is to create spaces where others feel secure, valued, and cared for. Whether around a dinner table, within our neighborhoods, on social media, or in our professional environments, we have the opportunity to foster safe spaces that transcend differences.
Despite the divisiveness often amplified by social media, studies show that most of us actually agree on much more than we realize. When we shift our focus to what connects us rather than what divides us, we build stronger, more unified communities.
As the poet Rumi said,
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
In a world where differences often overshadow common ground, true leadership seeks to bridge divides and foster connection. Let’s work together to strengthen your leadership skills, cultivate empathy, and create spaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and heard. Together, we can build communities — in workplaces and beyond — that focus on what unites us, empowering you to lead with compassion and authenticity.
