PERCEIVING AND JUDGING

PERCEIVING AND JUDGING image

Are you more P (perceiving) or J (judging)?

P often means that we prefer to use our perceiving function in our outer life. Externally, this can present as being spontaneous and open to new experiences.

J often means that we prefer to use our decision making function in our outer life. Externally, this can present as being decisive and orderly.

Most of us have elements of both within us; this framing has to do with how we like to interact with our external world.

The shadow side of P can be that we may linger too long in the information gathering phase which means we can be slow to make decisions.

The shadow side of J can be that we may focus too much on the goal or destination and miss information along the way.

Which are you?

And do these qualities ring true for you?

This idea comes from the Myers Briggs framework which seems to draw a love/hate response. Many people love it and swear by it; many psychologists hate it because it doesn’t honor the fact that introversion and extroversion fall on a continuum, and Myers Briggs draws a bright line.

Like anything, I find it a helpful perspective to consider, among a mix of lots of other things.
